Feast of St. Joseph
the Worker

Saturday 23 – Sunday 24 May 2026  |  25th Anniversary Year

On Sunday, 24 May 2026 — Pentecost Sunday — St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Bonendale-Bonaberi, Douala, celebrated its patron feast with colour, faith, song, and the gentle weight of a farewell. Although the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker is traditionally observed on 1 May, the parish community gathered three weeks later, and the coincidence with Pentecost gave the celebration a significance no calendar could have planned.

Eve of the Feast: Sporting Activities

The festivities opened the day before, on Saturday, 23 May 2026, with sporting activities organised across the parish grounds. Led by Brother Gilbert, parishioners of all ages were guided through a programme of exercises designed to promote mobility, physical well-being, and community spirit. The session was a fitting prelude — a reminder that St. Joseph the Worker is honoured not only in prayer but in the dedication of body and effort.

The Eucharistic Celebration

Sunday morning found the parish grounds transformed. Canopies stretched across the open field, decked in the deep reds and anniversary golds of the jubilee year, accommodating hundreds of faithful from all 29 Basic Christian Communities (BCCs) of the parish. The Solemn Mass was celebrated by the Parish Priest, Dr. Rev. Fr. Agi Livinus (MSP), concelebrated by the Assistant Priest, Rev. Fr. Festus Ezeagu (MSP Superior), and several other priests. The entrance procession — ministers in scarlet vestments, altar servers carrying candles, and lay ministers following in formation — set a tone of solemnity and festivity in equal measure.

The choir and parish band, led with precision and energy, lifted the congregation with hymns old and new. Traditional drums — the parish's own hand-painted sets bearing the name "St. Joseph" — anchored the music in the local idiom, while the combined voices of the massed choir filled the field.

A Homily for the Ages

Fr. Agi Livinus took to the altar ambo with characteristic warmth, beginning by acknowledging the presence of HRM Fon Ndecham Maxwell, a traditional ruler whose generous but discreet support of the parish has left a deep and lasting mark. The Fon, he noted, has been one of those quiet pillars without whom the community would not stand as it does today.

Drawing on the dual significance of the day — the feast of the Worker and Pentecost Sunday — the Parish Priest traced the journey of the parish from its origins under St. Louis Parish to its present flourishing at Bonendale, noting with pride that the community has grown to the point where some call it the new Jerusalem.

He explained the meaning of Pentecost: that it falls fifty days after the Resurrection, and that Christians, like the first Apostles, receive the Holy Spirit at Baptism and Confirmation. He spoke of the gifts that flow when a life is lived in fidelity to Christ — gifts not of comfort or status, but of clarity and peace.

When you serve, do not think about yourself or the reward you will have on earth. Work with a clear conscience — so that peace will follow you when you are called to leave.

— Dr. Rev. Fr. Agi Livinus (MSP), Homily · Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, 24 May 2026

He spoke of indispensability — or rather its illusion. Christ himself, he reminded the faithful, departed from the Apostles when the work assigned to him by the Father was complete. Every person, however much they have given, will one day be called away; the parish will continue. No one is indispensable. What matters is to leave with a peaceful conscience, knowing the assignment was carried out according to the will of God.

He noted that the very first words the risen Christ spoke to the disciples were not instructions or rebuke, but simply: "Peace be with you." That peace, he said, is the measure of a life of service.

Then came the announcement that no one had expected to hear that morning. Fr. Agi Livinus revealed that this feast — this very Mass — would be his last celebration as Parish Priest of St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Bonendale-Bonaberi. He has been transferred, likely to a posting outside Cameroon. He asked for no sympathy; he asked only that the peace of the Lord rest with every parishioner. The silence that fell across the canopies, followed by a deep and heartfelt applause, said everything words could not.

The Eucharist and Communion

The Liturgy of the Eucharist unfolded with reverence. At the moment of consecration, the golden chalice was raised above the altar — a gesture captured in one of the day's most striking images — while the faithful bowed their heads in silence. The distribution of Holy Communion brought priests and ministers out among the crowd, reaching all corners of the vast congregation gathered across the field.

Feasting and Community

After Mass came the feast itself. All 29 Basic Christian Communities retreated to their allocated canopies, each with its own colours, banners, and spirit. Drums sounded. Food was shared. The anniversary uniform — a vivid yellow and blue design bearing the "25th Anniversary" motif of the parish — was everywhere, lending the grounds a joyful, unified energy.

Children made offerings. Women in matching traditional attire processed and danced. The choir of Donendale DLA performed under the direction of their conductor. Rosary beads and devotional articles were displayed for sale. Interviews were recorded with the Parish Priest, Fr. Festus Ezeagu, and the Vice-Chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council, Mr. Ebung Chrysantus, each reflecting on the day and on the legacy of the outgoing Parish Priest.

The day closed as it had begun — in movement, in music, and in faith.
